The Institute of Textile Technology was founded in 1944 by textile industry leaders who saw a need for individual companies to join forces in collective support   of a private educational and research institution. Today, ITT enjoys an international reputation for the high quality of its programs and its graduates, many occupying positions of leadership in industry, education, and research.

The Institute was directed to conduct cooperative research, integrated with graduate research, as a means of helping the textile industry meet the challenges confronting it. The Institute continues to serve the role originally assigned by offering education scholarships to students majoring in the theory and practice of textile technology, carrying out research in the field, and by providing a center of information to keep the industry abreast of international developments in textiles.  The Institute also provides leadership conferences to textile executives concerned with key technical issues in the textile industry.

The Institute of Textile Technology continues to provide its "tradition of excellence" to the textile industry. Its capabilities have been strengthened through its alliance with the NCSU College of Textiles. Together, these institutions offer industry support that is unrivaled anywhere in the world.

The Institute also provides engineering consulting services through Applied Technology and Engineering, P.C. which helps clients improve performance and succeed in an increasingly, global competitive market.

The Institute Statement of Purpose

The Institute of Textile Technology shall establish and maintain an educational scholarship program at the undergraduate and graduate level for funding of students and for research in literary and scientific branches of learning. The Institute shall specialize in scientific instruction, research, and information service in those disciplines that apply to the material, processes, and technologies for the manufacture of textiles, their distribution, and use.

The Institute has established many goals and objectives that will prepare students for leadership careers in the ever-changing textile industry. These goals and objectives have allowed many ITT graduates to achieve various leadership positions in the U.S. textile industry.
