Abstract: Utilizing the C S I Stoll Quartermaster Universal Wear Tester, a yarn flex abrasion test has been developed. Reproducibility of the test was established as well as determining the effect of various test variables on yarn abrasion resistance. A correlation was found between cotton yarn tenacity and yarn abrasion resistance. In a study of yarn flex abrasion resistance versus fabric flex abrasion resistance, a highly significant, positive correlation was evident. Results from this work suggest that yarn abrasion resistance is indicative of the type of wear experienced in fabric performance and that appropriate yarn blends and form factors can be chosen to insure a maximum fabric resistance to wear by means of the yarn abrasion test described in this work.
