The concept of cleaning potential has been a concern to the cotton processor for some time. The thought that cottons can possess different cleaning potentials or trash removal capabilities has been addressed, but neither a means to denote cleaning potential nor a method of measuring it has been established. Developing a methodology that could be used by the plants was the primary objective of this thesis research. Thirty bales were used to develop a methodology; they represented three growth areas, and a range of lenths, strengths, and Micronaire as measured by the HVI system. The bales were carded on a standardized card after minimal cleaning via a hopper and fine opener.
